Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the personality of both the therapist and the patient, as well as upon the particular problems that the patient wants to address. Seeing a psychotherapist is an active process: in order for the process to be successful, you will have to "work" both during your sessions with Dr. Neel and at home.

Psychotherapy has both benefits and risks. Psychotherapy often leads to a significant reduction of your feelings of distress, and can result in both better relationships in general and in resolving specific problems. Risks sometimes include experiencing uncomfortable levels of feelings like sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger and frustration, loneliness and helplessness. Psychotherapy often triggers recollection of unpleasant aspects of your history. There are no guarantees about what will happen during psychotherapy; however, most patients find it can help them identify and change self-defeating or self-limiting problems; provide a new way of thinking about troublesome situations; and give them a safe environment in which to explore their feelings. In particularly stressful times medication should be considered, and some conditions have a biological basis that requires medical attention.
